Why Word Scramble Games are Good for Kids

You can use free printable word scramble games like this one at home, in the classroom, or even on the road. Or you could use them in Zoom meetings for online learning (tips on how to do so here). They'd even make a great rainy day activity too!

Free Spring Word Scramble Printable for Kids

This free printable spring word scramble game is perfect for kids of all ages.

My seeds are sprouting and growing strong. I've already had my first nap of the year in the sunroom. Things are definitely feeling like spring around here and I'm all for it, especially after our long winters.

So despite the large heaps of snow in both my front yard and my back yard, it seems like spring is here. However, there's always the possibility of one more dump of snow so, like any good Saskatchewanian, we haven't packed up the winter gear just yet. Although I could probably put away our snowshoes...

Either way, it's time to do all the spring things and enjoy some spring themed activities with the kids. Up first is this spring word scramble.

Camping Themed I Spy Game {Free Printable for Kids}

This free printable camping I spy game for kids is a perfect way to work on a variety of skills!

Summer is a great time to head outdoors and do fun things like go camping, even if it's in your backyard, like we recently did. Plot twist: it did not go well as we discovered that the tent had a hole in it and a lot of rain came leaking in...

Anyway, leak tent or not, you can help prep your kids for an upcoming camping trip with this free printable camping I spy game for kids. They'll love counting up all the different camping related items.

By the way, this I spy game pairs perfectly with the free camping themed WH question cards as it uses the same clipart.

Free printable camping themed I spy game for kids

I Spy Games are Versatile!

I spy games are tons of fun and great for kids of all ages. You can use them with toddlers or preschoolers or even preteens and teens. I know that lots of people have even used my I spy games with elderly people and those with dementia.

What I love about I spy games is how versatile they are, even beyond appealing to various age groups. There are lots of different ways to use them (there's a section below with some ideas) and they can also be used in different settings.

For example, I spy games are perfect to use as a quick boredom buster activity at home when the kids are saying, "I'm bored!" Or to keep kids busy while you're cooking supper.

They can also be used in the classroom as part of a learning center or included in a specific lesson or unit. You could also use them as filler activities for those kids who finish their classwork quickly.

You could also print off a bunch of the I spy games, package them up into a binder, and create a busy book for road trips or plane rides. You could even laminate them first (here's the laminator I use and love) or put them into sheet protectors and use a dry erase marker so that the book could be reused over and over.

I spy games are also a great activity to use in speech or occupational therapy since they can be used to target a variety of skills, which we'll touch on in the next section.

The Benefits of I Spy Games for Kids

There are lots of benefits to playing I spy games like this camping themed one.

For instance, they're great for developing visual tracking skills and improving visual discrimination. After all, these printable games require kids to visually scan through the objects, compare and contrast them, and find all the ones that are the same.

Then there's obviously the math benefits. I spy games are a great way to practice and develop math skills such as sorting, counting, comparing, etc.

You can also work on fine motor skills using I spy games. You might cross off items, cover them in play dough, or use tongs to place pom poms to cover the items (see the next section for other ideas for how to use I spy games).

Furthermore, you could work on handwriting skills with I spy games. After all, there is an answer sheet to record your answers and kids can practice writing numbers or drawing tally marks.

Playing I spy games with your kids is also a great way to work on speech and language skills. You could target articulation and vocabulary for instance. All of my I spy games include written words to accompany the images to aid in comprehension, especially for hyperlexic learners.

I spy games can also be a great way to work on executive functioning related skills and working memory.

See, lots of benefits! Now, let's take a look at some different ways to use this I spy game.

How to Use this I Spy Game

The most obvious way to use this I spy game is to simply print and play (you'll be able to download your copy below). Just grab a pencil, start counting, and record the number of items you found on the answer key (write the number or use tally marks, if you'd prefer).

Maybe you also want to cross off or circle items on the game sheet with a pencil as you find them.

Another option would be to use bingo dabbers or dot markers. You could also use pom poms or counters to cover the items as you count. You could even pair pom poms with tongs or tweezers to target different fine motor skills.

You could also laminate the I spy game first to make them reusable. Simply use dry erase markers to cross off the items as you find them and fill in the answer key.

You could also use play dough instead of dry erase markers to cover the items on the laminated game sheet. That way you add an additional sensory component.

Finally, you can go digital by playing this I spy game right on the computer or tablet. You can also pull it up during a Zoom meeting, teletherapy session, or similar using the screenshare function. Then use the annotate tool to cross off the items.

Spring & Easter Perler Bead Patterns

These Easter perler bead designs are perfect for kids to make this Spring!

My youngest son adores making perler bead crafts and these adorable spring and Easter perler bead designs are no different. He happily made a few of them.

What I love about perler bead crafts is that they can be turned into all sorts of things like magnets, key chains, necklaces, hair clips...the possibilities are endless!

But my son prefers to keep all this projects together in an old Pokemon tin and play with them like toys.

Easy Tulip Craft for Toddlers & Preschoolers

Brighten up your windows this spring with this easy tulip craft for kids. Toddlers and preschoolers are going to love making this tulip suncatcher.

The kids and I thought it would be fun to try our hand at some tulip craft ideas. After all, nothing screams spring like bright colorful tulips.

And this easy paper tulip craft is no exception. It's so pretty have this suncatcher hanging up in the window.

I mean, easy spring tulips crafts like this suncatcher are so refreshing this time of year. The dreary brown and gray landscape as the snow melts and the ground thaws is so blah and depressing. And this tulip craft adds the perfect punch of color to the early days of spring.

Besides, suncatcher crafts are kind of our thing around here. My kids love to make them and, honestly, I love them too! They're easy to make and great for kids of a variety of ages. Plus, our homemade suncatchers always use simple materials that you can easily find at the dollar store. They're materials that I actually always try to keep on hand anyway because you just never know when you might want to make a suncatcher!

Easy tulip craft idea for kids

A version of this post originally appeared on the CBC Parents website.

Easy Tulip Craft for Kids: What You'll Need

By the way, this fun tulip craft idea is perfect for destructive kids who like to rip things. I know because that is the reason we even started doing these types of crafts in the first place. My youngest, K, was notorious for ripping things as a toddler so we started turning that ripping into something more beautiful: art!

Here's what you'll need to make a tulip suncatcher of your own:

  • Contact paper - I actually use vinyl book protectors from Dollarama as it is super cheap. We used two rolls of it for this project. You may need more or less depending on how big or how many you want to make.
  • Tissue paper, ripped into small pieces or cut into squares - We used pink and green, but feel free to experiment with other spring colors.
  • Tape - To hold the craft in place while adding tissue paper to it.
  • Scissors - To trim the final suncatcher.

On the non-sticky side of the contact paper, use the permanent marker to draw the outline of a tulip, including the flower, stem, and leaves.

Once the outline is drawn, tape the piece of contact paper to a flat surface with the sticky side facing up.

Outline of a tulip drawn on contact paper

Keep in mind that kids of all ages can make these tulip suncatchers, even young toddlers. Depending on your child's abilities and skills though, you might have to prepare the tissue paper ahead of time. For instance, you could precut the tissue paper into squares for really little ones. Or, if like me you have a child who likes to rip things, just supply them with pieces of tissue paper to rip and tear as they please.

Now it's time to start decorating the flower!

Outline of a tulip drawn on contact paper

How to Make a Tulip Suncatcher

For this craft, my five year old chose pink tissue paper for the flower and light green for the stem and leaves. Together, he and I ripped the tissue paper into small squares before starting the craft. You can see the two piles next to our contact paper.

Then my son simply placed the pieces of tissue paper on the sticky side of the contact paper, staying somewhat inside the lines of the tulip outline that I drew earlier. (Note: they don't have to stay inside the lines perfectly as we will be trimming it at the end.)

Close up of a child's hands placing green tissue paper onto contact paper as part of a tulip craft

Repeat until the entire flower, stem, and leaves have been covered.

Once the entire flower has been covered, seal the suncatcher with another piece of contact paper. Then cut out the tulip and tape it up in a window. It looks especially beautiful in contrast with the white snow still hanging around outside. I know it's definitely making me wish that spring would arrive as soon as possible.

I absolutely love how this tissue paper tulip craft turned out! It looks lovely in our living room window. And I think your kids are going to love it too!

Creative Ice Activities for Kids that are Perfect for Summer

12 fun ice activities for kids. A great way to keep cool this summer!

It has been so, so hot here lately. Like ice cream melting faster than you can lick it, dripping down the cone and on to your hand, hot. So, needless to say, we've been looking for ways to keep cool, which is where these exciting ice activities come in.

I mean what better way is there to beat the heat than a little water sensory bin or some refreshing ice play, right?

On this particular day though, I figured water just wasn't going to cut it. We needed something colder. Much, much colder. So I grabbed a bag of ice. Okay, more like a couple of ice cube trays worth of ice. Then I started thinking about different ways we could play with the ice cubes.

The result is this collection of ice activities for kids. And I just know you're going to love these ideas!

Fun ice activities for kids to try this summer

You've Got to Try these Ice Activities for Kids!

Now, if you look on Pinterest, you'll find lots more fun ice activities than the ones I'm going to share with you shortly. Fun things like ice tower excavation activities or fizzy ice sensory science or colorful ice boats. But, honestly, those ideas all require planning ahead and prepping the activity a day in advance. And that's not really how I roll...I'm more of a grab some ice cubes from my freezer and do something now kind of person.

However, if you're up for planning things the night before, you could make some colored ice cubes for the kids to play with. Just color the water before you freeze it.

Easy DIY Kids Bike Basket (That's Upcycled Too!)

How to make a DIY kids bike basket using a plastic baby wipes container.

On a complete whim, I put together this DIY kids bike basket for four year old K.

See, he really likes to collect rocks and sticks - like a lot of toddlers and preschoolers do! Often, he places them in his pockets or mine, but sometimes, neither of us have pockets and he needs somewhere to put all his little artifacts. He needed a little storage basket of some kind.

So one morning, we were going to go for a bike ride to the pond near our house, but he was being a little resistant to go. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted an old empty wipes container in our garage and I asked him if he would like to collect treasures in it. Then I thought, "Hey, let's attach it to the handlebars and make a storage basket for your bike!"

K was thrilled with the idea of having his own little basic bike basket to store all his little treasures in.

So my husband eagerly grabbed the drill and some string. Within minutes, K was ready to collect treasures from the pond in his brand new upcycled bike basket.

Now, I know there are lots of different bike basket options out there that you can just buy.

But remember, we made this on a whim as a way to entice a four year old outside. And I think this finished upcycled bike project turned out really cute! Plus, it accomplished our goal of getting him outside. Nothing like a little creativity and a simple DIY project to save the day!

And could something as simple as a homemade treasure basket for his bike possibly lead to some long biking excursions as a family in the future? I doubt it, but time will tell.

Anyway, are you ready to make this hip new bike basket for your kids? Whoa, did I really just say hip? Why yes. Yes I did. I don't even know who I am anymore.

DIY Kids Bike Basket: What You'll Need

Here's what you'll need to make your own DIY upcycled bike basket for kids:

  • Drill - a must for many DIY projects!
  • String or zip ties - to attach the finished bike basket to the handlebars of the bike
  • Kids bike (obviously) - You can also attach the finished basket to balance bikes or even scooters

How to Make this DIY Bicycle Basket for Kids

On the back of the wipes container, carefully drill four small holes: two on top of each other on each side (see photo below). I say drill carefully because it is very easy to accidentally drill through the front of the wipes container. The size of the holes will depend on the size of the string or zip ties used to secure the container to the bike.

Next you need to loop the string or zip tie through the holes and secure the container to the handlebars of the bike.

That's it! It literally takes just a couple of minutes to put this DIY upcycled bike basket together.

Since many plastic wipe containers already have designs on them, you can make your cute bike baskets without much work. For instance, ours already had a lovely Finding Nemo sticker on it. That should tell you how old this container is!

But if your container is plain, your kid might want to decorate it themselves. A clever bike basket hack like might need a little personalization. Your kid could use permanent markers, stickers, and/or washi tape to decorate it.

The great thing about this DIY upcycled bike basket is that it can be opened in two ways. Kids can lift the whole lid to insert larger items into their basket...

Or they can pop open the wipe dispenser part to insert smaller objects. K really loves to push rocks through this small opening. Already this bike basket hack is so much more entertaining than those boring bike baskets you can buy.

What a simple DIY project, right? And the kids are going to love being able to collect their own treasures in their DIY kids bike basket on our next bike riding adventure.
