Establishing routines are so beneficial for kids.

Some kids, however, need visual reminders and prompts of what it is expected in their routines.

This free printable after school routine chart is the perfect checklist of things for kids to do when they get home from school. From helping to empty their backpack to making sure their homework is done, this visual routine checklist is perfect for kids with autism, ADHD, or hyperlexia. The written words paired with the simple picture aid in comprehension and understanding, while the checkboxes - er, check circles - allow kids to see their progress.

I don't know about you, but my son loves a good checklist. Heck, even I like checking things off of a to do list! Checking things off a list is extremely rewarding and gives me a sense of accomplishment. Come on, I know you feel the same way too! Let's just hope the kids feel that sense of accomplishment too when they're checking things off of this list.

How to Use this Visual After School Routine Chart

Here's what you'll need to use your after school routine chart:

  • The free printable, which you can download below

This visual routine chart was designed for autistic, ADHD, and/or hyperlexic kids who benefit from using visual schedules and routines. Simply print, laminate, and hang somewhere that makes sense. For us, we have it by our back door where the kids would naturally dump their backpacks on the floor. This routine chart is to remind them to do more than just leave their backpack at the back door though. It encourages them to become independent and help out.

The kids will enjoy checking off the items on their list with the dry erase marker. They don't have to go in the exact order list, which is why they are no numbers on this chart. Instead, it's more like a checklist. Then simply wipe it clean before the next use.
