Hyperlexic kids and letters go hand-in-hand. So it's not surprising that hyperlexic kids gravitate towards an ABC book like Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and absolutely fall in love with it.

I also know what it's like to go through that intense letter fascination stage with hyperlexic kids. And sometimes you're just looking for something a little different to do. Something to switch it up. Yet, something that still incorporates their interest in letters or Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

That's where this I have who has alphabet game comes in. 

This game features a coconut tree like you'd see in the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and also incorporates letters. But it also focuses on asking questions, answering questions, turn taking skills, and more! Many skills that hyperlexic kids often need some extra support and practice with. 

About this I Have Who Has Alphabet Game

This alphabet game comes with two versions so you can practice lowercase letters as well as uppercase letters. 

Each card features a coconut tree paired with a "I have.." statement and a "Who has..." question. The cards are intentionally kept simple in design so that they're less visually distracting and less overwhelming.

Since hyperlexic kids can read, the text is easy for them to handle. It's actually a perfect written script for them to use. After all, hyperlexic kids find written scripts super helpful!

For kids who can't yet read, they can definitely memorize the pattern of the text since it always follows the same format of I have, who has? You just might have to teach them the format of the question and answer style required to play.

How to Play this Alphabet I Have Who Has Game

This letter game can be played with two players, a small group, or even a large group, such as a classroom.

To play, shuffle and deal out all of the cards to all players. 

Whoever has the card that says "I have the first card" goes first. They read what it says on their card, which in this case is, "Who has a?" 

The player who has the a card then reads what's on their a card.

Then the game continues on and on until you've gone through the entire alphabet. 

The game ends when the person with the last card reads "I have the last card."

They'll even recreate scenes from the illustrations - from memory! - using their alphabet magnets. It's amazing how many times I've seen photos of hyperlexic kids arranging their letters just like they see in the pages of the book.

Now, some might think that a word scramble for a book geared towards small children might not be appropriate given that most kids that would be the target audience for this book cannot read, spell, or write yet. But hyperlexic children aren't like most children you'd know!

Activities that involve letters and words are highly motivating to hyperlexic children. As are word games. It's also not uncommon for these kids to write early. 

So while this Chicka Chicka Boom Boom word scramble might not be a good fit for most young children who love this book, it is indeed a perfect fit for hyperlexic children!

Why Word Scramble Games are Good for Kids

Word scramble games are a great way for kids to work on vocabulary, spelling, language skills, working memory, problem-solving skills, writing, and so much more! There's a wide range of skills you could target here. Just get creative.

The book is, after all, a story about the letters of the alphabet racing each other up the coconut tree. It essentially brings the letters of the alphabet to life and makes learning the alphabet fun.

This particular book is so well-loved by hyperlexic kids that I've seen hyperlexic kids dress up as the coconut tree with letters for Halloween or book days at school. So when I say they love the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, I mean they reeeeeeally love it.

All you need to do is cut some green and brown construction paper into different shapes: triangles, squares, and rectangles. Then let your kid assemble and glue the shapes to form a coconut tree. Then add some alphabet stickers to finish it off.

They could help you make the tree by wrapping the cans in contact paper, gluing construction paper in place, or by painting the cans...lots of possibilities here!

This Chicka Chicka Boom Boom printable teaches kids how to do deep breathing, while racing their fingers (or a letter toy if they want!) up to the top of the coconut tree, just like the letters of the alphabet do in the book itself.

I designed this deep breathing exercise with hyperlexic kids in mind since the book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" is a favorite among these kids (see: the best books for kids with hyperlexia). I find that the story itself fit well with breathing exercises like triangle breathing or some of my other breathing exercises that I've shared.

It's important to use the hyperlexic child's interests and strengths when teaching them new skills so why not use their love for Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and letters to teach them useful coping strategies such as deep breathing.

A Simple Breathing Exercise for Kids that's Inspired by the Book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

I like how this simple breathing exercise can be adapted further to follow the book closer. For instance, you could:

• Grab a letter magnet (or similar) and race it to the top of the coconut tree as you do the breathing exercise

• Say "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" as you reach the bottom of the coconut tree

I'm sure your kids will come up with some other fun ways to use this mindfulness poster!
