Free Printable I Have Who Has Alphabet Game Inspired by Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Looking for for a fun Chicka Chicka Boom Boom activity? Then you'll love this free printable I have who has alphabet game for kids that's inspired by the book.

Hyperlexic kids and letters go hand-in-hand. So it's not surprising that hyperlexic kids gravitate towards an ABC book like Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and absolutely fall in love with it.

I also know what it's like to go through that intense letter fascination stage with hyperlexic kids. And sometimes you're just looking for something a little different to do. Something to switch it up. Yet, something that still incorporates their interest in letters or Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

That's where this I have who has alphabet game comes in.

This game features a coconut tree like you'd see in the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and also incorporates letters. But it also focuses on asking questions, answering questions, turn taking skills, and more! Many skills that hyperlexic kids often need some extra support and practice with.

Free printable I have who has alphabet game for kids inspired by the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

About this I Have Who Has Alphabet Game

This alphabet game comes with two versions so you can practice lowercase letters as well as uppercase letters.

Each card features a coconut tree paired with a "I have.." statement and a "Who has..." question. The cards are intentionally kept simple in design so that they're less visually distracting and less overwhelming.

Since hyperlexic kids can read, the text is easy for them to handle. It's actually a perfect written script for them to use. After all, hyperlexic kids find written scripts super helpful!

For kids who can't yet read, they can definitely memorize the pattern of the text since it always follows the same format of I have, who has? You just might have to teach them the format of the question and answer style required to play.

How to Play this Alphabet I Have Who Has Game

This letter game can be played with two players, a small group, or even a large group, such as a classroom.

To play, shuffle and deal out all of the cards to all players.

Whoever has the card that says "I have the first card" goes first. They read what it says on their card, which in this case is, "Who has a?"

The player who has the a card then reads what's on their a card.

Then the game continues on and on until you've gone through the entire alphabet.

The game ends when the person with the last card reads "I have the last card."

Free Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Word Scramble Printable for Kids

This free printable Chicka Chicka Boom Boom word scramble game is perfect for kids of all ages, especially those who are a big fan of the popular children's book.

One children's book that is popular among hyperlexic children is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. They just adore this book and love to read it over and over!

They'll even recreate scenes from the illustrations - from memory! - using their alphabet magnets. It's amazing how many times I've seen photos of hyperlexic kids arranging their letters just like they see in the pages of the book.

Now, some might think that a word scramble for a book geared towards small children might not be appropriate given that most kids that would be the target audience for this book cannot read, spell, or write yet. But hyperlexic children aren't like most children you'd know!

Activities that involve letters and words are highly motivating to hyperlexic children. As are word games. It's also not uncommon for these kids to write early.

So while this Chicka Chicka Boom Boom word scramble might not be a good fit for most young children who love this book, it is indeed a perfect fit for hyperlexic children!

Also, if you've been looking for other ideas on how to use your hyperlexic child's interests in letters, then word scramble games are a great fit. They definitely build off of a hyperlexic child's interest in letters. I mean the game is literally just a bunch of letters. Besides, using your hyperlexic child's interest to teach new skills is definitely something you should be doing - and something you'll hear me say a lot around here!

He just assured me he was never going to respond to it. Ever. What can I say except that he's as stubborn as I am!

Writing, on the other hand, is a big struggle for one of my boys. So I'm hoping that these Mario themed writing prompts for kids are enough to encourage and inspire him to do a little bit more writing each day.

Ideas on How to Extend this New Year's Activity

My oldest son J is a pro-star at math (he has hypernumeracy after all), so these ended up being way too easy for him. Not surprising though. He did, however, find ways to extend the activity on his own.

First, he noted that a lot of the words had the same score, so he graphed them.

Then we did a tally chart of how many words had certain scores.

He then told me which words had the most points and which one the fewest. Lots of math learning went on!

Free Printable Calculator Word Riddles for Kids

I remember finding it hilarious to spell words on a calculator when I was younger. So when I recently showed six year old J how to make his calculator say hello or hi, I wasn't shocked when he found it hilarious as well.

But honestly, spelling words on a calculator seems to be the ultimate activity for kids with hyperlexia and hypernumeracy as it combines letters and numbers into one.

So, unsurprisingly, this free printable calculator word riddles for kids was right up his alley and has entertained him for hours!

This activity is also a great way to work on language skills such as WH questions and comprehension, an area that hyperlexic kids often need extra support with. I explain more below.

Free printable calculator word riddles for kids - a fun math and literay activity for kids using a calculator from And Next Comes L

Fun Math & Literacy Activity for Kids: Calculator Word Riddles

For this activity, you will need:

  • Free printable calculator word riddles pack (link to download below) - There are 80 riddles in all!

Print, cut, and laminate (optional) the calculator word riddle cards.

Encourage your child to read the question out loud and read the numbers before entering the "secret code" into the calculator. Or you can read the question out loud and have your child answer it by decoding the answer. Both offer the chance to practice comprehension.

Once the number has been entered, flip the calculator upside down to read the secret answer.

I purposely phrased all of the questions on these calculator word riddles as WH questions as a way to practice WH question words and comprehension with my hyperlexic and hypernumeric son

Due to his hyperlexia, he finds WH questions tricky so these cards are a great way to take his interest in numbers to work on speech and language skills. You can find more resources for working on WH questions and comprehension here.

The questions on these cards also explore concepts like pronouns, opposites, and acronyms. It also gives definitions for specific words, which is a great way to expand my son's vocabulary. So it definitely has lots of speech and language applications!

This printable is eight pages long. Each page has 10 cards for a total of 80 cards with riddles. Each card features a WH question with numbers below it. Your child has to put the numbers into the calculator, flip it upside down, and read the answer.

Humpty Dumpty Light Table Play

This month's theme for the Light & Reflections Series is nursery rhymes and I have to admit that, at first, I was stumped on what to do. I ended up settling on Humpty Dumpty as the inspiration for this light table activity for kids. It ended up being much more amazing than what I had originally planned in my mind, but it encouraged lots of storytelling and color mixing exploration. And, more importantly, my kids loved it!

Humpty Dumpty light table play for kids from And Next Comes L

Light Table Activity for Kids Inspired by Humpty Dumpty

For this light table activity, I used:

  • Scissors

Cut oval shaped eggs out of various colored transparencies. Then draw little Humpty Dumpty faces on them. They don't have to be perfect, just egg-like.

I originally intended to make egg puzzles for the kids to assemble on the light table. You know, so the kids could put Humpty Dumpty back together. So after I cut and drew the colorful eggs pictured above, I quickly took some photographs of them before I cut them into puzzles. Well, suddenly the kids swiped the eggs from underneath me and started playing. So I left the eggs as is and just watched them play with them however they wanted.

First, they layered the eggs and made different colored Humpty Dumptys.

The two boys even worked together while color mixing (notice the three hands below).

Five year old J even arranged them into a traffic light.

Nursery rhyme inspired light table activity for kids from And Next Comes L

But then the really fun part started. J started making up his own version of Humpty Dumpty shortly after I stopped photographing. I had even put away my DSLR.

Nursery rhyme inspired light table activity for kids from And Next Comes L

Now, J doesn't really do pretend play or storytelling (likely due to his hyperlexia and autism diagnoses), but he has been showing some growth in these areas. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised to see him act out an entire story of his own creation. To my surprise, that did not happen. Luckily, I had my phone nearby so I was able to capture some of his storytelling, which you can see below.

So naturally, it only made sense to expand upon the other math printable pack and go into the world of big numbers and ordinal numbers. This numbers themed Scrabble math printable pack is jammed pack with big and small numbers and would be perfect for even preschoolers to work on learning their numbers.

Math, Money, Time, & Shapes Scrabble Math Printable Pack

It's no secret that our house is math obsessed (especially due to J's hypernumeracy), so it only made sense to make a math themed set of Scrabble math printables. This particular set focuses on concepts like money, 2D shapes, 3D shapes, time, and more! There's lots of words to practice spelling and adding. My son could not wait for me to finish making these ones! And when I was making this pack, he asked, "Where's millenium?" I almost forgot millenium - how dare I! Ha! He's always one step ahead of me.

All About Me Scrabble Math Printable Pack

My boys are addicted to Scrabble math and they simply cannot get enough. I love that these printables are great for a variety of ages. Both my preschooler and my early elementary son can work on them independently in ways that suit their needs and their skills. The latest ones we have been working on have focused on an "all about me" theme, focusing on body parts, family members, the five senses, and the clothing that we wear. I've bundled them all up into one easy printable pack, which you can download below.

Alphabet Soap Foam Painting Activity for Kids

This alphabet soap foam painting activity is a lot of fun for toddlers and preschoolers.

Soap foam is a favorite go-to sensory activity around here. We have tried scented soap foam and tie dye soap foam in the past (as well as many other variations) and my kids just love it. Even I enjoy playing with it!

Recently, the boys have been playing with our giant box of cookie cutters. It's one of their favorite "toys." So I decided it might be fun to pair the cookie cutters with some soap foam and do a little writing and fine motor practice.

The result is this alphabet soap foam painting activity, which my boys loved! I knew it would be a hit given that simply adding letters or numbers to anything will always grab my hyperlexic son's interest.

Soap Foam Painting Activity: What You'll Need

This activity is part sensory play, part process art activity, and part prewriting practice. It combines fine motor and sensory all into one fun activity. Here's what you'll need to recreate this activity at home:

  • Liquid soap and water - To make the soap foam that will be the base of our sensory and soap foam painting activity. Instructions below if you've never made it before. You can use dish soap, castile soap, or similar.
  • Blender, electric hand mixer, whisk, or stand mixer - To whip up the sensory soap foam. Although I do mention an alternative way to make soap foam using soap pumps.
  • Small cups or a muffin tin for the paints - We personally reuse little plastic applesauce or fruit cups for activities like this.
  • Paint brushes - Again, it's a painting activity so you kind of need these.
  • Large plastic container - To contain all that soap foam we're about to make...

To prep this activity, you'll first have to make soap foam (details below) and add it to a large plastic container.

Next, you'll have to dilute some liquid watercolors with water in some small cups or a muffin tin. We personally like to reuse plastic applesauce cups for this purpose, but a muffin tin or small bowls work great too. We made rainbow colors because life is better with rainbows, but feel free to make whatever colors you want.

Finally, put the alphabet cookie cutters, paint brushes, and the containers of paint next to the container of soap foam. Then it's time to play!

Soap Foam Recipe: How to Make Sensory Soap Foam

To make soap foam, you'll need to mix some liquid soap with a splash or two of water. How much you'll need will depend on the size of the container, but a little goes a long way. We personally like to use castile soap for our soap foam and happened to use almond scented castile soap for this activity, which smells incredible. So our finished batch of soap foam happens to be scented.

Anyway, you're going to have to whip the soap and water until it's bubbly and foamy. You can mix it up using a blender, electric mixer, or even a stand mixer. Or you can simply whip it up using a whisk and some good old fashioned muscle power. It just takes a bit longer by hand. But any of these methods will produce the fluffy soap foam you need for this activity.

Another way to make soap foam is to use a foam soap dispenser. Fill an empty foaming soap bottle with approximately 2 tablespoons of castile soap, top it up with water, and then let the kids pump the soap into a large container. Most kids love to pump those soap pump containers! This method works best if you're only making a small amount.

Your Kids Will Love Painting Letters in Soap Foam

For this activity, you'll simply place an alphabet cookie cutter on the soap foam and paint the inside of it with some of the diluted liquid watercolor paint. That's it.

The kids can paint individual letters or even spell words and paint those. My boys opted to paint random letters versus full words into the bubble foam, as you can see below.

The painted cookie cutter letters look so pretty. I especially love the rainbow painted W that five year old J did.

When the cookie cutters are removed, you can sort of see the painted letters floating on the soap foam.

After painting for quite some time, my boys decided they were done painting letters. So they dumped the remaining liquid watercolor paints in, used their hands to mix up some really colorful soap foam, and turned it into a full fledged sensory activity.

Overall, this soap foam painting activity was a hit! It was great for working on fine motor skills, a little sensory play, and some alphabet learning.
