Encouraging my kids to do writing can be a bit challenging. But, like most things, I always try to use their special interests to try and pique their interest.

I've already created some writing prompts for kids that are Mario themed and Sonic themed. So it made sense to make my boys some Pokemon themed ones too since it has been an interest of theirs for years now.

So if you have a little Pokemon fan at your house too, then I hope they'll have with these prompts!

15 Pokemon Themed Writing Prompts for Kids

Grab a pencil and some paper and use these prompts to get your kids writing! And be sure to grab the free printable version of these prompts (available at the bottom of this blog post).

1. Who is your favorite Pokemon character? Write five reasons why they are your favorite character.

2. What is your favorite Pokemon video game? Explain why it’s your favorite.

We've fully embraced the world of Pokemon in our house. And have for years.

Since things are a little Pokemon-obsessed around here from time to time, I thought it would be fun to let the kids make DIY pokeballs, as we've already designed our own Pokemon cards.

These homemade pokeballs make a great craft for older kids and are an awesome homemade toy for encouraging imaginative play. But I could see them making a great party favor for a Pokemon themed birthday as well.

How to Make a Pokeball - A Super Easy DIY!

Here's what we used to make our DIY pokeballs:

• Styrofoam balls - Pick a size that will fit comfortably in your child's hands.

• Permanent markers

I started off by making the regular Pokeballs for the kids. Then six year old J made one of this own as well, but of course, it disappeared by the time I could take pictures. His turned out really great though!

So depending on the age of your child, they could certainly make their own Pokeballs as well. It would be a great craft for kids who really love Pokemon.

Or have your child design their own Pokeballs using these free Pokeball coloring sheets before making the 3D version.

I also tried making some of the other types of pokeballs, including an Ultra Ball and a Great Ball, which the kids love as well. However, these two are K's favorite of the bunch.

These DIY Pokeballs are great for encouraging imaginative play since the boys pretend to be Pokemon trainers releasing their Pokemon for battle. Simply toss the Pokeball and call a Pokemon's name!

I'm not a baker nor do I pretend to be one, but I do love making homemade birthday cakes for my boys.

And I promise...it's not that hard to make a really cool Pokemon birthday cake for your kids!

Seriously, if you can bake a cake (it doesn't even have to be from scratch), use a knife, and are capable of slapping some colorful icing on said cake, then you can handle making any of these easy Pokemon cakes.

You don't need to use fondant for these cakes either (that crap is nasty anyway!). Just give me good ol' buttercream icing any day. Mmmmm!

5 Fun Pokemon Birthday Cakes for a Kid's Pokemon Birthday Party

1. Pokeball Cake (skill level: easy)

If you have round cake pans and can manage to follow a recipe for making a cake, then you can easily whip up a Pokeball cake. This tutorial can even be simplified. Simply skip the fancy piping technique and use a knife to spread the red and white icing onto the cake. You'll probably still need to use a piping/icing bag to add the black stripe though.

2. Togepi Pokemon Cake (skill level: easy)

This cake is made from one round cake pan and uses just a little bit of cutting. Super easy with a great step-by-step tutorial.

3. Easy Pikachu Cake (skill level: easy)

If you're not too familiar with Pokemon, I bet you still at least recognize and know who Pikachu is.  This Pikachu cake was the first Pokemon cake I ever made for my kids and it was super easy. All you need is two round cakes to get you started. Cut one, but not the other, and piece it together.

4. Leafeon Pokemon Cake (skill level: medium)

It doesn't have to be a Leafeon cake. You can follow this tutorial to make any of the Eevee evolutions into a fun birthday cake. All you need is a rectangle cake, a good inspiration image, and semi-decent knife skills. You'll love the awesome tip in this tutorial about how to make a cutting template!

5. Rayquaza Pokemon Cake (skill level: hard, but not as difficult as it looks)

I used two round cakes to make this masterpiece, but you could easily just bake a rectangle cake and cut out the shape. I just really wanted a snake-like look to the finished cake. While this Pokemon cake was definitely one of the harder birthday cakes that I've made over the years, it really wasn't as hard as it may appear at first glance. But if I can make it, so can you!

Since my oldest was a baby, I vowed to make my kids' birthday cakes every year. Not something plain or boring. I wanted it to be something cool and dare I say, epic?

I am not a professional cake maker as you can tell, but my skills have certainly improved over the years. I do have a lot of fun making these homemade birthday cakes for my boys and they love seeing their favorite things come to life in cake form.

For my youngest's 6th birthday, he wanted a Togepi Pokemon birthday cake. I knew this would be one of the easiest cakes I have made yet because it all started with a simple round cake. So I'm pretty sure I made this cake in record time.

What You'll Need to Make this Togepi Pokemon Cake

This is probably one of the easiest birthday cakes I have made over the years. And it's certainly easier to make than the other Pokemon birthday cakes that I have made.

Here's what you'll need to make this Pokemon birthday cake:

• Cake mix or your favorite homemade cake recipe (go with whatever is easiest!)
• 9 inch round cake pan
• Icing or your favorite homemade icing recipe
• Piping bag
• Icing spatula or butter knife
• Food coloring: yellow and blue
• Red decorating icing tube
• Black decorating icing tube
• Knife to cut the cake
• Toothpick

Bake the cake as the recipe calls for. You will only need to make one 9-inch round cake. Let cool completely before assembling the cake.

Here's what we're going to make!

How to Make a Togepi Pokemon Birthday Cake

1. After the cake has cooled, place it on the tray that you will be serving the cake on.

2. Using an image of Togepi from Google or the photos in this post as a guide, cut the cake into the shape of Togepi's pointy head. That's the only cuts you'll need to make (at least, until serving time!).

3. Make your icing (skip if using store bought). Split into three portions (one portion should be about 55%, one 40%, and one 5%).

4. Add some drops of yellow food coloring to the medium portion of icing and mix until the color is evenly distributed. Repeat with the blue food coloring to the smallest portion of icing. Leave the largest portion white.

5. Add a generous layer of white and yellow icing to the entire shape of the cake and along all edges. Use the photos below or your inspiration image from Google as a guide to know what parts will be white and what will be yellow.

6. Chill the cake in the fridge for about 20 minutes.

7. Add an additional layer of white and yellow icing if needed. Otherwise, run a butter knife or cake knife over the entire cake to smooth the icing as best as you can.

8. Use a toothpick to mark the red and blue details onto the white part of the cake. Then draw eyes and the smile on the yellow part using the toothpick.

9. Add black and red details using the decorating icing tubes. Tip: if you aren't serving this cake immediately, the black and red icing will bleed. You may want to decorate these details closer to serving time. <-- I need to remind myself of this tip every year!!

10. Use a piping bag with the blue icing to decorate the remaining details.

11. Chill until serving time.

Every year I make and design epic birthday cakes for my boys.

Since their birthdays are just five days apart, that means I spend one entire day per year baking, designing, decorating, and consuming too much icing as I make these birthday cakes.

For my oldest's 8th birthday, he requested a Leafeon cake as it was his favorite Pokemon character at the time. In my head, it seemed straightforward to make and design and honestly, it was.

This Pokemon birthday cake is surprisingly simple to make, even if you don't think you are creative. Trust me, YOU can do this and your kid will love it!

What You'll Need to Make This Leafeon Pokemon Birthday Cake

Like all my birthday cake tutorials, I forgot to take step-by-step photos. It's hard enough to bake and decorate two full birthday cakes in one day...There's just no way my brain can remember to take photos along the way too!

Here's what you'll need to make this Pokemon birthday cake:

• Cake mix or your favorite homemade cake recipe (I'm not here to judge which route you go - I've done both types over the years)
• 9 x 13 rectangle pan
• Vanilla and chocolate icing or your favorite homemade icing recipe (homemade is the route I always go!)
• Piping bag
• Icing spatula or butter knife
• Food coloring: yellow and green
• Knife to cut the cake
• Parchment paper and permanent marker (this is to make the cake template)
• Toothpicks

Bake the cake as the recipe calls for. You will need to make one 9 x 13 cake. Let cool completely before assembling the cake.

How to Make a Leafeon Pokemon Birthday Cake

1. After the cake has cooled, place the cake on the tray that you will be serving the cake on.

2. Next, you'll have to design the template for cutting. You'll need a large sheet of parchment paper, a permanent marker, and an image of the design you want to use (I usually pull up an image from google on my iPad). So this step is all about finding the inspiration image! I just went with Leafeon's head, obviously. Keeping it simple, right?

3. Draw the design you want on the parchment paper using the permanent marker. You just need the outline of the entire head, not the details of the eyes and whatnot.

4. Place the finished template on top of the cake and use toothpicks to secure the template to the cake.

5. Use a sharp knife and start cutting the cake, following the parchment paper template.

6. Remove the template and toothpicks.

7. Make your icing (skip if using store bought). Split it into three portions (save 50% or so for the yellow, 35% for the green, and 15% for the chocolate).

8. Add some drops of yellow food coloring to your icing and mix until the color is evenly distributed. Repeat for the green. Add cocoa powder to the vanilla icing to make the chocolate icing, if you are making homemade.

9. Add a generous layer of yellow icing and green icing (following your inspiration image or the cake photos in this post as a guide as to where to put the green and where to put the yellow) to the entire shape of the cake and along all edges. This will become your crumb coat (i.e., hide the cake as best as you can).

10. Chill the cake in the fridge for about 20 minutes.

11. Add an additional layer of yellow and green icing if needed to make sure the cake is mostly covered. Otherwise, run a butter knife or cake knife over the entire cake to smooth the icing as best as you can. Tip: wet the knife with a splash of water to help smooth the icing. Be sure to save a teeny tiny amount of green icing to finish off the eyes in step 15.

12. Chill the cake again for another 20 minutes or so.

13. Use a toothpick to lightly draw the eyes, nose, and inside of the ears.

14. Use a piping bag full of chocolate icing to draw the eyes, nose, and inside of the ears using your toothpick marks as a guide.

15. Use a piping bag of green icing to pipe a dot for each eye.

16. Chill until serving time.

Then be sure to celebrate on a job well done. You did it!

Homemade Squirtle Costume

This tutorial for making a homemade Squirtle costume for kids is so easy! Your kids will be begging you to make them a Pokemon Halloween costume like this!

Halloween is going to be here before I know it and I'm really hoping my kids will want to wear their homemade Pokemon costumes from last year again. Both boys went as their favorite Pokemon characters. J had his Pikachu costume and K had this adorable homemade Squirtle costume.

How to Make a Squirtle Halloween Costume

For this costume, I used:

• Blue fabric (fleece was too darn expensive!)
• Tan/yellow-ish fabric
• Brown fabric
• Velcro
• Hot glue gun
• Felt: black, white, and red
• Elastic (for wrists and ankles)
• Paper, tape, and pencil to create the patterns
• Foam pad
• Brown ribbon
• White chord/rope (pretty sure this was leftover rope from the homemade taco swing)
• Fabric marker or permanent marker

I created a pattern using existing clothes and followed the video tutorial found below to make the Squirtle costume, but thankfully, I already had the Pikachu costume under my belt at this point. Just like the Pikachu costume, I opted for using velcro instead of buttons or snaps and made it generous in size. I also had to wing it to make the yellow body of Squirtle, as well as its shell.

Our Finished Squirtle Costume

This costume turned out so incredibly cute, despite me sewing one of the arms in backwards and having to do copious amounts of seam ripping. Seriously, do not sew a costume at midnight right before Halloween. You will make lots of mistakes! I also ended up making the hood of this costume super huge, but whatever, K loved his finished costume!

For the mouth, nose, and eyebrows, I used a permanent marker to draw them and then sewed over them with black thread.

As for the shell, it is removable and attaches with velcro so that K could wear the costume in his car seat. To make the shell, I cut a large foam pad into an oval and wrapped it in brown fabric, hot gluing it along the edges, being sure to leave a 1" or so overhang to put the white cording. Fun fact, when I purchased the foam pad, K insisted that I buckle it up for safety in the car's passenger seat. So like a good mother does, I made sure the foam pad wore its seatbelt in the car.

I then created the lines on the shell by hot gluing brown ribbon in place. Then I wrapped and hot glued white cord numerous times around the edge of the shell, making sure to burn my fingers with hot glue multiple times along the way.

Overall, the Squirtle costume turned out amazing and was a perfect compliment to J's Pikachu costume.

I remember my mom making almost all of the Halloween costumes that I wore as a kid. It always made me feel incredibly special, knowing that no one else would have a costume like me. 

So even when my boys were babies, I wanted to make homemade costumes for them too. However, I skipped a few years of making them simply because we were given awesome hand-me-down costumes. 

Then last year, the boys requested Pokemon costumes. 

And I don't know about you, but the store bought costumes look so cheap and utterly terrible sometimes. Besides, trying to find specific Pokemon characters, such as Squirtle, which K requested (tutorial here), would prove to be quite difficult. Especially on short notice.

A quick Google and YouTube search lead me to an amazing Pikachu onesie tutorial that I knew would work perfect for making virtually any Pokemon character. So with that inspiration in mind, I dashed to the fabric store to spend a good hour or two perusing and touching all the different fabrics, just hoping to find a decently priced fabric that would work. Fabric is so expensive here in Canada!

Then I found the perfect bright yellow material in the clearance racks and I was officially ready to whip up this homemade Pikachu Halloween costume just days before Halloween. 

And it turned out faaaaaabulous!

How to Make a Pikachu Costume

For this costume, I used:

• Yellow fabric (fleece was too darn expensive!)
• Brown fabric
• Velcro
• Hot glue gun
• Felt: black, white, and red
• Elastic (for wrists and ankles)
• Paper, tape, and pencil to create the patterns
• Pillow stuffing

I created a pattern using existing clothes and followed the video tutorial found below to make the Pikachu costume. Instead of using buttons or snaps though, I opted for velcro because buttons and snaps can be tricky for J to manipulate.

I also made the costume generous in size for two reasons. One, if I am going to make a costume like this, then I want to get at least a couple of years out of it. Two, we live in Saskatchewan where some Halloweens can be mild and others can require a full snowsuit to be worn underneath. So it's best to be prepared for all weather conditions!

The hood of this Pikachu costume turned out so ridiculously cute! With a little bit of felt and some hot glue, it was easy to put the finishing touches on.

Most importantly, J thought it was the best costume ever and happily wore it to show off at school. It was also plenty warm with a small jacket and fleece pants underneath to go trick-or-treating in. It also looked fantastic next to our two Pokemon themed jack-o-lanterns, don't you think?

Another change I made was to make the tail larger. I thought the tail was much too small in the video tutorial. Since the tail was large, it meant it could drag on the ground. So I added some velcro to the tip of the tail so that it could be velcroed up between the shoulders. It also meant I could unvelcro it and J could still sit comfortably and safely in his car seat with the costume on.

At our house, Pokemon is life.

We read a lot of Pokemon books. We play a lot of Pokemon Go. We make a lot of Pokemon crafts. I even just made two Pokemon birthday cakes, one for each boy, this past weekend.

My kids have also really gotten into perler bead crafts. 

In fact, one of the first perler bead crafts my kids made was this pokeball. This pokeball perler bead craft for kids is super easy to make and can be turned into a keychain or magnet for your child to proudly display wherever they please.

Pokemon Craft for Kids: Make a Pokeball Perler Bead Project!

To make your own pokeball perler bead craft, you'll need the following items:

• Perler beads in red, black, and white
• Perler bead pegboard
• Perler bead ironing paper
• Iron

Use the photo below as a pattern to make your own pokeball on the pegboard.

Place a sheet of ironing paper over top of the completed design and run a warm iron over top of the paper until the beads start to melt and fuse together. Carefully flip the creation over and cover the backside with some ironing paper. Melt the backside with a warm iron.

Then when the beads are melted and still warm, I like to place a stack of textbooks on top to make sure the design stays flat.

Pokemon Craft for Kids: Make DIY Pokemon Stress Balls

These DIY Pokemon inspired stress balls are so simple to make and any Pokemon obsessed kid will love making their own stress balls inspired by their favorite characters. Here's what you'll need:

• Balloons
• Funnel
• Something to fill the balloons with: rice, baking soda, epsom salt, aloe vera gel, flour, play dough, or anything else you'd like to try!
• Permanent markers

Slip the end of the balloon onto the end of a funnel. Slowly pour in your material of choice until the balloon is full. Then tie the ballloon. Next, take your trusty old Sharpies and get drawing!

Making a Pikachu stress ball was a must considering he is J's favorite Pokemon character of all! The other ones that I made where chosen simply based on what colored balloons I had on hand. So we made four Pokemon stress balls altogether. There was Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur. We filled ours with baking soda.

Totally cute, right? Especially Pikachu! Like seriously, look at that little squishy face of his.

These DIY stress balls are perfect for squishing and squeezing as a hand fidget, like below, but they also make great homemade toys for promoting imaginative play. My boys especially loved making these stress balls their "buddy Pokemon" by placing them on their shoulder and walking around with them.
